Forum: movies Subject: In terms of US works, are pre-1923 musical compositions public domain?

There's a recording of "Tiger Rag" I'd like to use in a project...the recording itself is public domain, but is the composition public domain too? Same goes for a recording of 1913's "Ballin' the Jack".

I don't understand copyright law, so please forgive my stupidity on this subject matter.

Could somebody *please* help?

Everything published in the United States before 1923 is in the public domain. It doesn't matter what it is.
